Remember there are parathesis after the sentence.
1. "What happened?"(Mason, pg.13)
or
2. "What happened"(Mason, pg.13)?

If I had to put in a 'period,' I do it like #1. It's the question mark that is screwing me up.

Cookie is wrong. Punctuation is not always within the quote.

Number 1 is correct.

The rule with quotation marks and question marks is very simple, really.

If the quotation is a question, then the question mark goes inside the quotes. For example:

She said, "Shall I go to the store?"

If the quotation is not a question, but is emobied inside of a question, then the question mark is on the outside of the quotes. For example:

Did she really say, "Go to hell"?

Hope this helps.

Final Verdict:

The First Sentence is Correct. he paranthesis? What is the difficulty with the question mark? It should be within the inverted Commas.

I believe that it is the first one because the parenthesis isn't part of the sentence. The Question mark also belongs within the quotation marks.

punctuation is always within the quote.
the parenthesis just shows the reference and has nothing to do with the composition of the sentence.
