sport is something that is a leisure activety, people do it because they want to do it because its enjoyable and used to be completely amature and people still watched it no differently than they do today. College people play sports and still have to fit in a full time school, so why cant "professional" sports people do the same? If no one was paid to play sport, they would do it anyway, so why pay obscene amounts of money for something that most people willingly do for free?

As college people play sport and still find time to do all their school work, people who train for the olympics are generally schoolaged as well, and ALL sport was once amature only but still viewed the same as today, therefore since they could all fit in a full time job, so could todays sports people.

Professional sports should not pay the players what they pay them now. Especially all of the illegals in baseball who are getting paid millions because some scout thinks they have "talent".

It's called competition. If you want the best in life, you have to pay for it. And also, if every soccer team didn't pay their players anything, why would that player go to training 5 days a week and then turn up for match day? These guys are constantly watching what they eat and drink. Would they if they wern't getting paid? So, clubs started paying players to abide by a regime and rules and play to a high standard. The obscene bit comes in when one person wants a player for his team, more than his competitor. So they bid for the player and as with most auctions, highest bidder wins. However, if the other team is offering more money weekly then the player may prefer a move to that team himself so the original team have to up their weekly salary. This trend continues over a number of years until we reach the dizzy heights of 30 million transfer fees with 100's of thousand weekly. It's all about winning and to win you need the best tools and for the best tools you need lots of moolah.

p.s I don't agree with the fact that some sportspeople earn more in one week than most do in a lifetime but eh, thems the breaks.

Because they've built an industry around it.
The sports companies pay these people obscene amounts of money to sport the newest items so that sales will boom.
And these people build their lives around it, its not just a fun activity to them, it is their life. They would be out of a job if they weren't good at that. They trained for years to get where they are.
I agree they are paid way too much but for them it isn't just a leisurely activity, it is life.

I agree that they are paid too much, but they are doing a job. You should be paid to do a job. Working out, traveling, and playing sports is a full time job. If people would do it for free, how would they pay their bills because they would not be able to have a day time job?

There may be this little factor called 'betting' that influences outcome and perhaps the huge salary supposedly lessens that influence.
