As far as beginner guitars go, don't buy a Fender or Gibson. If you're just starting to play, don't blow all your money on a "designer" guitar. I haven't owned a cheap guitar before, but I think the Cort guitars range from beginner to advanced.

It depends on what style you would like to play as well. If you want to play acoustic, you could buy a Spanish-style guitar. Those are usually good for beginners and can go for really cheap. If you're interested in electric, try a cheap knock-off brand of a Fender or Gibson. Look on Ebay.com for great deals on guitars, or talk to someone at a music store who has some knowledge about guitars and has been playing for a while. (Don't talk to some young guy who has no idea about music!) If you like, you can email me and I can help you more.

I would go with a Squire Strat. They are relatively inexpensive, have an instantly recognizable shape, have a great tone, and are not too bad to play if they are set up properly. Strat is short for Sratocaster which is a guitar model produced by Fender.

For an acoustic I would recommend a Washburn D10 or D100. Both are excellent instruments for the money and look and sound superb (as soon as you change the strings).

Fender and Gibson are usually expensive.....something like a Washburn isn't bad for a beginner and they look pretty good.
