my hamster is two years old and when we first got him he has had other times where his foot has gotten swollen. Usually we let the foot heal by its self, but recently it seems to have come back and sometimes dosn't fully go away. I would like to know what causes this and how to stop it in the future.

The only way you can determine what the cause is is to take him to a veterinarian. He may have a blood clot or circulation problem, or maybe he does injure himself but you just can't see it. Does he feel uncomfortable and act strangely when his foot is swollen, or does he act normal? If he acts normal despite it, it's probably nothing, and it probably isn't hurting him, but I would definitely recommend taking him to a veterinarian the next time it happens, or at least take a picture of when it happens so you can ask your veterinarian about it if the swelling has gone down by the time you get in.

It sounds like an infection and if you think he's in pain, I would suggest taking him to a vet. 2 years old is very old for a hamster, they don't usually live much longer than this.

The poor little hamster, is most likely in pain to. Sound's like it may have been biten by a spider. You really should see a Vet. If you can't take it to a Vet, call one to see what you can do for your hamster.Inflamation, can hurt, & please remember, they can't talk, to tell you what hurt's them, so the hamster is counting on you for help.
