There's the long running joke on his show that he hates bears and considers them the greatest threat to American security. He's never really explained why, but he has called them "godless killing machines".

Its especially amusing because he refers to Bill O'Reilly as "Papa Bear", supposedly because he looks up to him and bases his show on his. But if he considers bears the biggest threat... :D

It's a manufactured quirk that leads to making "inside" jokes that make people feel more familiar with the show and Mr. Colbert himself...an affected quirk, if you will.
