My husband and I are definately done having kids.. we have two beautiful, healthy, happy daughters and with a genetic disorder that runs in my husband's family we're going to settle with the two we have and not gamble anymore. I am currently on NuvaRing, but we want something more permanent. We've researched both, but wanted to get some feedback from people who have been there- would you recommend a vasectomy or a tubal?? Why or why not?? Anything we should know about??

Vasectomy - I have heard it is safer for the guy to have vs. the woman having surgery.

I had a tubal done this past November and I will tell you that I think it was one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made. Immediately afterwords I was filled with regret. Like you, my husband and I had two children, but ours are both boys. We decided that we didn't want any more children although not for the same reasons as you. One thing my doctor asked me before the procedure was, if your husband and 2 kids left for the grocery store one day and were all killed in a car accident, would you want more children someday if you remarried? That was a gut wrenching question to answer. And at the time I thought I had made the correct decision. But once it's done, it's done. And it's very difficult to reverse a tubal. Although right now I don't want anymore children, I think most of the regret comes from knowing that I CAN'T ever have a baby again. If I were you I would try go either with the vasectomy for him or a more long term birth control such as an IUD, which some last up to 10 years now. If you don't change your mind in 10 years, you probably never would. I hope this helps.

Well I had a tubal and I have liked it so far it has been 4 1/2 years. The one side effect that I have had is that I don't get my periods regularly, they come maybe every 6 months or so. They also don't last as long as they used to. I haven't had any other problems. I used to work in an obgyn office and we had pt.'s who's husbands had the vasectomy's and still got pregnant. My thought is if you get pregnant after having either procedure than it was the God's will that you have another child. Best of luck.

Can only tell you about a tubal and I tell you that I love it.

I have two boys and I figured I am done. I'm not of the success rate of ever reversing a vasectomy but tubals can be very successful. That's a perk of tubals and the added benefit of not being able to get pregnant. YOur period would vary afterwards though. I've heard that people have worse periods and I am one that have gotten lighter and shorter. No matter what, it is surgery and you will be out of work.

Not sure what yall should do but make sure that it works for both of you. In the end it's your decision.

Good Luck!!!

vasectomies are so much easier to recover from, less risks, and should not have any sexual side effects. my cousin's husband had one, and is glad that he did!! whereas I, on the other hand, had a tubal, and i hated it!!! but, after 4 kids, and i'm the only one w/ insurance (my bf and i are STILL not married...) it wasnt much of an option for us. it was a painful recovery, and i felt bloated and sore for WEEKS on end!!! granted that i DID have my daughter rite before the surgery, but as i said, she was my fourth child, and this was nothing like your normal discomfort after delivery... if given the opportunity for a "redo" , i'd opt for the vasectomy and pay out of the pocket versus going thru that again!!! also, there is some discussion of local health dept.s considering medicaid coverage for vasectomies, so check into it, it may have already gone into effect!!!

This isn't from personal experience but I have heard bad things about tubals. I have heard of people getting pregnant afterwards and that your periods become heavier and crampier. I would go with the vasectomy. It is an outpatient procedure and more reliable than the tubal from what I have heard.

The only sure way to make sure you mam have no more children is for you to have a tubal ligation. The only sure way for your husband to ensure he does not sire any more children is through a vasectomy. You see , infidelity is always a possibility today as is rape. Both surgeries are outpatient procedures and both are safe and effective. Good luck

vasectomy is an easy, relatively painless procedure that has less risks that the more invasive tubal ligation. mine took about 10 minutes, there was some soreness, but it wasn't that bad, and there is NO DIFFERENCE IN FEELING OR PERFORMANCE. plus you get some good drugs....in fact i'd do it again just for the drugs!

plus you know how guys like to show off their scars.

Have you asked your Dr? It might be rarer, but as a nurse I have nursed men after a vasectomy and their groin swollen to the size of cantelopes is very uncomfortable. Not to meantion they don't forget why it happened. The women after a tubal liagation were like that's done, what's next, myself included.

Well, if your not going to deliver in the near future the safer route is the vasectomy. Now days it's an outpatient procedure, with quicker recovery time than you having surgery.

Tubal is a more major operation than a vasectomy. It is more expensive and done under general anesthesia. (I had it done almost 20 years ago - that made me stop for a moment lol)
It didn't affect my sex drive if that's a question.
