Snakes find their food through their excellent sense of smell. Unlike humans, snakes do not use their noses to smell. Instead, the snake smells through an organ on the roof of the mouth called the Jacobson organ. When a snake flicks its tongue in and out of its mouth, it collects scent particles from the air which the snake passes to the Jacobson organ.

*sigh* Snakes do NOT smell with their tongues. The tongue flicking is more like "tasting" the air, where they gather particles which are interpreted by the jacobson's organ... Most mammals, including humans, also have some sort of jacobsons organ, even if it is less developed. Have you ever smelled something so that you could taste it? It's somewhat similar to that. But snakes DO have nostrils, and they DO use them to smell.

no they dont, it is a common mistake.

Snakes smell with their tongues, which is why they're always sticking it out. sounds bizarre but its true:

"A snake smells by using its forked tongue to collect airborne particles then passing them to the Jacobson's organ in the mouth for examination. The fork in the tongue gives the snake a sort of directional sense of smell. The part of the body which is direct contact with the surface of the ground is very sensitive to vibration thus a snake able to sense other animals approaching."

They use their tongue to smell. Some snakes have something that looks like a nose, but it's usually just pits on their face they use to sense heat.

Yes, snakes do have noses, as well as a Jacobsen's organ, which is used to "taste" the air. The only other animals that have the Jacobsen's organ are felines!!!!

No- they use their tongue to smell. It collects particles from the air and ground and then carries that back to the Jacobson's organ and that is how they find their prey.
