What I mean by Question is that why are Indians so fond of people with fair skin?
Thye are so fond of fair skin that they much rather marry or even have relationship with a fair skinned person who is totally wrong for them than a smart Indian boy/girl?
I have noticed this in my many instances. Unfortunately I dont have enough space to write down all the instances.
If an Indian is involved with a fair skinned person he/she thinks they have a prize and however bad the person stick to them like glue.
Now i have NOTHING at all against white people. I just want to understand the thought process or lack thereof in this scenario.
My opinion is that deep inside their soul Indians still think white people are superior to them because of the 150 plus years of British rule in India. No one will obviously admit to this, but maybe sublimanly this is possible.
I am Indian myself and am not bring Indians down in any way.
Let me know your opinions
Any one is welcome to answer

PLEASE FOR GODS SAKE READ MY COMPLETE QUESTION
I AM NOT SAYING THAT ALL INDIANS ARE LIKE THIS BUT THE MAJORITY ARE. THIS IS THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH IS BITTER SOMETIMES.
RATRI DO YOU KNOW WHY THOSE HAWKERS AND VENDORS TRIED TO CHEAT YOU OR JUMP ON YOU TO SELL YOU STUFF. THE ANSWER IS BECAUSE YOU ARE WHITE. THEY ARE FASCINATED BY YOUR SKIN COLOR. THEY WOULD NOT DO THAT TO AN INDIAN WOMAN GENERALLY SPEAKING. THE FACT THAT THEY WANT TO CHEAT YOU OUT OF MONEY IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY ARE POOR LIKE THE MAJORITY OF THE INDIAN POPULATION. I AM SORRY THAT YOU HAD TO FACE SUCH A SITUATION BUT YOU ARE JUST PROVING MY POINT.

I am caucasian lady (russian) married to indian man. And i cant agree with you 100%. Yes, may be white skin attracts at the first glimpse, but it is not easy for white-skinned to live in India. I will tell you what i had to face:
1. People think about you as the tourist, who came for entertainment. No matter what you do and how long you live there you will stay the "tourist" and will hardly become the usual society member.
2. "All goris are rich". Useless to describe that you are from middle-class and dont have packs of dollers in the pocket.
3. "All goris are easy to be fooled". Once i went with my infant baby to see my in-laws on moto-riksha. The usual price was 15 rs, so i forgot to announce it that time. Just imagine my surprise, when this riksha asked me for 200 rupees!!!! I was lucky that my father-in-law came out and told him what he was not right, hehe. Many times hawkers jumped on me, offering to buy the junk for mad money, that they never offered to the local people.
4. It is difficult to get the job, because company-owners think you will ask for more salary than person of indian origin. When i was looking for job it was not difficult to pass the phone interview, but when the HR persons saw my fair face they used to refuse me.
When it was the time for my daughter to go to the KG, it was not easy to find one for her as well, because noone wanted to take "extra" responsibility.
So the real life is different from the TV show or picture in the fashion magazine.

I don't really think that its a case of "thinking" very much. There is a demonstrable natural tendency for humans to search the mates which will provide the greatest survival probabilities. It is much more instinct than "thinking." The "white" or fair skinned Europeans had a nice run for about 3-400 years and got quite a jump on every other race. That coupled with the very real racism especially during the 1800s due to Darwin's racist notion that some races were more "advanced" than others and there grew up a very real advantage to having light skin. (Just look at how much better the fairer skinned Kashmiris and Punjabis were treated by the British than their southern darker countrymen)
As the white European dominance has been slowly fading away over the 20th century, you will note that the worst forms of racism have been fading as well. Contrary to what Mr. Hitler and the KKK like to claim, people are not attracted only to their own kind, but more often to the exotic and different. It is interesting that even the most racist societies have had to pass laws against racial intermixing such as South Africa, the American South, Nazi Germany, you don't have to do than when people are naturally repelled by "inferior" races quite the opposite in fact....
Of course judging anyone by how much light their skin reflects is the height of stupidity and history reflects that. However these kinds of "reverse" discrimination have been prevalent in other societies. We have seen similar phenomena in Mexico only now dying out, and even in the United States you will observe extremist white liberals who attack their own "western" culture and glorify any other, no matter how barbaric or brutal.
Sometimes its a survival impuse, sometimes its just stupidity, and sometime it may just be the swing of a cultural pendulum....

I can't say much, as I am a white American married to an Indian man; however, I, too, have noticed the numbers of television and print ads for "Fair and Handsome" or "Fair and Lovely" products, as well as the numbers of whitening roll-on deodorants and other skin-lightening beauty products. I, too, wonder why this obssession with "fair" skin exists in India? It is exactly the darkness, or exoticness, of Indian women, that would fascinate most American men I know. Is it cultural? I don't know. It is definitely a distinct cultural trait, though I do not know from where it originated. Even my husband has said that my skin isn't as "fair" as it was when I first came to India---and my skin color is "stark white," still!

I am sure your opinion is correct to some extent but can you imagine if all of 1 billion of us really chased the white race?
I can understand where you are coming from but dont forget we are a lost lot. Our self esteem has been eroded completely by muslims and whites during the last 1400 years and more and we were subservient to the british for a very long time. He was master using the whip and indians were not allowed near white people much. Then the muslims. Well. Lets leave that for another lenghty discussion.
Not just that. We were made to feel small about ourselves. We still feel that as everyone and anyone is telling us what is right for us. We have to tolerate obscene violence and thuggery in our country and we dont know what to do as the world seems to be applauding the perpetrators.
Maybe they are just trying to find out why white people have belittled them for so long.
Believe me it is a very small portion who is trying what you are saying.
If one billion started chasing white skin, lo and behold, what do you think is going to be the end result?
Personally I do not understand why anyone would want to move away from one's own culture and traditions to chase another but we are all very curious creatures.
Some of us expose ourselves totally bare on tv and internet and some of us would not be seen dead in the same pose.
I dont agree with the mixture of races and religions. I have personally experienced it and it leads to total confusion and painful experiences in the children.
All the best.

First of all it is a fact that Indians especially Fair ones like we find in North are obsessed with this thought.
However it is not totally correct just look at our politician and you will come to know we rate coloured people higly and even trust them governing the Nation.
It has nothing to do with the British Rule. The Aryan Race from Europe and near Ural Mountain Area migrated to Indain Sub Continent around 6000 or 7000 years ago. As you know Aryans are the generally racists and they love people of thier skins. That is why if you go south you will observe a barrier for fair coloured people.
I am sorry to everyone who felt I sound racist but that is fact.

Its not so always in whole of India. The trend you are talking about is mostly seen in Northern part of counrty. However in my opinion the reson goes back to ancient period. the original inhabitants of India where not fair in colour, while the aryans whole came from outside had fair skin. they pushed the original indians to south. the rivalary which existed then could have taken subtle form of like and dislike with period of time. There are also reasons of survival and preservation of the race which works unconsiously and therefore who somewhere down the lineage belong to fair coloured people prefer fair colour. Aryans where also much ahead in terms of knowledge and civilisation therefore superior. perhaps this liking for superior and better blended well slowly with colour of person as belonging to superior race or people.

thats true.. but people don't practice this "reverse racism" so much today.. well i think the people think that the fair the skin the richer they are, because if they are rich then they have money on cosmetics. if you have Z-TV, there is a show called a saat phere. that portrays a dark dusky looking girl having hard time as people don't accept her, including her own mom, but when she got a proposal from a high reputable family, her mom started praising her daughter.. it's a drama. nothing serious but it does deal with some real life situations.

Yup. Most Indians practice racism. While they fall over backwards trying to ingratiate themselves with goras, they abuse Africans, calling them kaalus and monkeys and other nasty things. And fairness is the national obsession in India, other than the Civil Service exams. But I get the point of the Russian lady too.

The best question i have ever seen on yahoo...
Hey i feel the same way. It is the indian backward mindset. We indians have been ruled over 200 years by the goras and firangs.
WE KNOW THAT WE ARE INFERIOR TO THEM..
So, having a gora or gori is like a prize for us, u know so that we can show off to our desi friends with the same mindsets.

I totally agree with you views. The reason I think might be due to the fact that we are not white. So as the logic says opposites attract each other. Thats why we are attracted to the white skin.
Suppose we had been born white with blue and green eyes. Even after that we would have been that much attracted towards the white? I donot think so.
