Um, what do you mean by dropsy? Bettas are freshwater fish--they don't need salt. Your fish might have a simple fungus or ick problem--just go to Wal-Mart, avert your eyes from the bettas in the cups, and get some Ick-Out or something with povidone or some kind of all-purpose cure. Clean out his container well, dose him according to the package instructions (the dose is probably per 5 gallons, so if you have a one-gallon tank, then the dose for 1 gallon will probably be about 20 drops if it's a liquid, or split up a tablet for smaller amounts of water. Adjust accordingly for smaller amounts of water.) Fungus can be white spots on the body, pop-eyes, swollen lips, or tail or fin rot. Ick is little white cysts all over the body. Don't give up until you try a proper treatment--I don't think dropsy is your fish's problem. Dropsy is congestive heart failure in humans.

By buying another one at Walmart you are creating the demand that they are supplying. You should find a pet store that floats their bettas in filtered tanks or has a filtered wall unit. Most self respecting pet stores no longer keep Bettas in those ridiculous containers.
Fish get sick because of por water conditions. Get a filtered tank for your next fish and a water test kit.

I wouldn't buy Betta's from Wal-mart. I would invest in one from a good pet store. I once had a Betta fish live for three years.

You should get Bettas from a good petstore such as Petsmart because they will know more about the fish so if you have questions you can ask them and they will know the right answer. So dont get Bettas from WalMart because they dont specialize in fish so they wouldn't know everything about Bettas.

i love betta's... they are low maintenance, beautiful, tiny pets.
besides the horrid conditions they are kept in at the stores, keep in mind that wal mart isnt where they were born. prior to that they were probably mishandled, malnurished, etc. before they were sold by the breeder.
This is clearly evident by the way they perk up, are more kinetic and have vibrant colors just a week or so after you buy them.
its probably not your fault and the fish probably had a disease way before you bought him/her.
