It is generally characterized as a one level house. But I think houses that do not have specific "styles" are often lumped into the ranch catagory.

It is a one story 2 -3 (usually) bedroom home. Became popular in the 60's. usually is plain in details, nothing fancy in the way of added architecture. They built complete neighborhoods with the same floorplans, in most major cities as they were fast to build and very popular for first time buyers.

I think it just means a kind of sprawled out, one story house. Kind of ugly, in my opinion.
