I am doing a Master´s Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine and apart from acupuncture and body work (such as massage and Qi Gong) Herbal medicine is an important part of this holistic approach.
We had to learn more than 300 single herbs and all of them have certain functions and can heal a broad variety of diseases. It is really fascinating what big success we have in clinic with diseases like rheumatism or fibromyalgia. The treatment is always a combination of acupuncture and herbs.
Apart form Chinese herbs there are many other herbs you can use for healing or improving certain diseases.
It is really a wide field.
If you are interested in herbs here are a few websites:

Jen, there was a point in time when natural herbs was all that man had to take care of his ailments. Then we got into fomulating compounds, increasing potencies, all the chemicals, etc. etc.

Different cultures and societies view things differently too. The Chinese are convinced that their different teas remedy different ailments. Green tea for this, brown tea for that, white tea for something else.

The native Hawaiians also have a high regard for plants and herbs as medicine. Kind of depends on what you want to cure.

You name an ailment, post it to the www and will problem find holisitc remedies for most everything.

Many folk would have you believe that natural herbs on their own can cure everything from halitosis to cancer.

Plants are fantastic resources for medicine, but they are merely a place to start. Many wonderful drugs were derived from or isolated from plants. Willow bark gave us aspirin, for instance. There is a bark of a tree that contains a compound that reduces tumor size. These are wonderful things, but the natural cures movement would have you believe that herbs alone can fix everything. This is simply not true.

I would feel comfortable making a general statement that many minor ailments can be treated with certain herbs containing chemicals in them that act on the cause of the ailment. Aspirin in willow bark, for instance, to cure that headache (although it causes stomach ache). There have been studies done that shows certain oils can lower the needed dose of antifungal medicine in certain fungal infections. Ginger pills seems to prevent seasickness.

Chewing that bark with the tumor reducing chemical in it won't cure your cancer, though.

So herbs aren't useless, but neither are they panaceas.

You're still better off just taking aspirin in a bottle than making bitter willow bark tea.

Most of the over-the-counter herbal remedies like you can buy at walmart have little or no effect. You can thank this administration for exempting herbal remedies from actual standards. Therefore there has been no attempt to see if a remedy actually works, to find out what working ingrediant is, how this would have to be prepared to maintain the potency, or how much you would actually need to take.
