I think that Affirmative action is a step in the wrong direction when dealing with universitites... a person's race should have nothing to do with whether or not they get into a university... in fact I think it should all be based on academic merit with some emphasis on extra-curriculars... but not too much because there are the people who go for the titles and do none of the work... just to get into college... thoughts?

I agree. Those who benefit from such racist policies will not.

In a just world where everyone truly is equal (in race and gender, since affirmative action was created for women as well as minorities), admission to colleges and universities would be solely based on a student's personal achievements. But considering that White men still hold about 95% to 97% percent of high-level corporate jobs - and that's with affirmative action programs in place - it seems that this policy is the only way women and people of color have a chance to compete academically and in the business world.

The truth is that as long as discrimination, racism and sexism still exist, affirmative action will continue to be a relevant and necessary policy.

Affirmative action has helped not only black Americans but women and those who serve in the military as well. If the world were fair we wouldn't have needed affirmative action to begin with.
