I would like to buy an Ipod for my son, cause he keeps bragging about it and his birthday is coming up. I just wanted to ask, are Ipods pretty good players? What experience do you have with them, good or bad? Are they easy to operate? When I buy one do I have to buy bunch of other stuff to make them work " better"?
I know they are expensive. Are they worth the money? Please, advise. Tks

Now here's something to consider. if he asks for an iPod, and gets a Zen, is he REALLY going to be that happy with it?

iPods are great lil machines. they work. sure people have problems, but just as many if not more have problems with other technical devices like computers, PDAs and other household electronics. it's kinda part of the game. it's got a lot of parts, and stuff CAN go wrong. but it happens. Just get AppleCare and you'll be fine

They're excellent players, and more importantly perhaps for your son (depending on how old and/or tech-savvy he is), they're very easy to use. They come with the iTunes software, which is used for both syncing music to the player and purchasing new music. (You can also download free songs, maybe not so commercial but free, and "import" them to the player via iTunes).

iTunes and the iPod are extremely well-integrated, unlike Windows Media Player and the large number of MP3 players that it's supposed to work with).

There are many accessories for the iPod, but none you have to buy to listen to music. The iPod, the included earbuds, and the included iTunes is all you need.

My wife has an iPod Nano and a have an iPod Shuffle. I've owned several other MP3 players in the past (I still own an iRiver H10), and the iPods are by far the easiest to use.

There's been a lot of bad advice in the answers given so far, especially the one that says that iPods don't work well with Windows PCs. They work perfectly fine with Windows PCs.

Ipods are really overpriced and it barely comes with everything you need. You pretty much are paying to the Ipod name. Any accessories you might want, add $30-$60 for each one. (a few rubber covers will set you back at least $40)
plus, if you drop it or crack the screen, Apple will not help you at all.
If money is no object, Ipods are good mp3 players.

Yes they are MP3 players. iPods are much better tho. they have games, stopwatch, You can put notes,Contacts, and photos. you can put volume limit for kids so they dont get deaf... and screen lock. It's Educational too! you can Listen to books! you can pick a language. you can see the time and date. and pick a place to see the time. you can shuffle the songs.there is a calander . there is a to do list on it too! you can get a dock then put your iPod on it then amplify your music so more then 2 people can hear it. a special kind of dock also has an alarm clock that plays your music whenever you set it to turn off.

I would say they are worth it but how old is your son? I mean i use mine all the time. I use it when i go to class, on an airplane, and workout. If you do get him an ipod i would buy the new one with the video. I have that and its really nice because you can watch your tv shows or videos and it even holds pictures.

I don't think so, I have taken my ipod to the apple store many times and even if they replace it with a new one it always ends up broken again, although they are the cute ones on the market.... but if you're looking for quality don't buy an Ipod...

I've had my iPOD mini in the shop 3 times already for the songs skipping and they keep replacing the hard drive. Maybe the NANO is better since it doesn't have the HD.

Ipods are ok if you have a Macintosh

If you have a pc a different brand would work alot better
