Green Day isn't classified as pop by genre, but they've become pretty mainstream, so for what pop stands for (popular), they could be classified as such. Sorry for the wishy-washy answer but that's how it is.

The problem with it is that "pop" stands for "popular" music. Nowadays with these crappy MTVish radio stations, they play and overplay any song that these teeny boppers like. Green Day has become pop music because it is now popular music. The mainstream radio listeners listen to Green Day.
I agree that Green Day's sound is alternative but unfortunately MTV got ahold of their new cd and ruined it.

I consider Green Day "pop rock", perhaps alternative 10 years ago. Their sound is so clean and polished. The production standards are definitely pop and the voice and lyrics are juvenile.

Like could this question BE any longer??? And I'm going to assume that you've been arguing with your little friends somewhere other than here, where we're not 14 and we don't give a darn abut Green Day!

Wow. You wasted like 10 minutes typing that didn't you?
They're more like pop/punk. Are you old enough to know punk?

Uh, since Green Day is very popular, very accessable and very radio friendly, I'd say they're the very definition of pop.
