why fly appear after oppening food no matter how far they are?

I was at desert storm conflict, and we were in the middle of the dessert and no flies were seen, until we start eating food.

The sense of smell of other animals is up to 10,000 times stronger than that of us humans. We really have a very poor sense of smell as animals go.

maybe bcoz they can smell it
