Is it because of personal beliefs, party loyalty, or anything else?

I’m not strictly a Democrat, but often end up voting either for democrats, independents, or third parties. Sometimes I vote democrat just because it seems like the most realistic way to keep Republicans out. I vote mostly on issues and on my own intuitions about the nature of the person running for office. I sympathize with many libertarian views on social issues, but do not see economic anarchy as the best policy.

One of my pet peeves concerning republicans is their double-standard concerning personal liberty. They portray themselves as opposing big government, etc., because they supposedly believe in individual liberty and want to limit government interference. But then they end up supporting the most socially oppressive forms of government interference (usually in the name of “family values” or some such drivel which is never really about supporting families, but always turns out in reality to be something like “my religion is the only right one, so if you don’t like it you don’t deserve to live under our one nation under God” or “my sexual preference is the only good one, so I will do everything I can to make yours illegal” or “my preference for a traditional nuclear family based on life-long monogamous commitment between male and female is the only morally acceptable option, so I will do everything I can to make everything else illegal, and I will promote a variety of forms of social peer pressure to make everyone conform to my views”.) And so far as I can tell, the phrase “no child left behind” really means: “No child of rich white parents left behind” – or perhaps “No public school teacher left standing.”)

It also seems to me that Republicans tend to put their heads in the sand when it comes to environmental issues. They seem to think that we can spew all the toxins we want into the environment, and somehow it will magically all be ok. That is just plain stupid. Most animals have enough intelligence to understand that they should try not to foul their own nest. Globally speaking, the earth is our nest, and Republicans more often than not seem to think it is perfectly fine to crap all over it, thereby revealing a level of environmental intelligence lower than the average house pet. I don’t especially love democrats, but often find myself forced to choose the lesser of evils.

The person above is absolutely WRONG. Many studies have proven that the more educated you are the more an American tends to be a liberal. (this is based on education level not wealth success)

I was republican until the 92 election when I switched to independent. I then voted for Ross Perot in 92 and 96. In 2000, I registered Democratic but still based it on the person. Now I am what is called a yellow dog democrat. That means I am a democrat no matter if a yellow dog is running.

Why am I a democrat and why have I gone to the extreme?
Because I see some very extreme fundamental differences.
- I believe in war as a last resort.
- I believe in UN support and if the UN is corrupt, instead of bailing on them, instead try to fix them.
- I believe we have a duty to pay our elderly social security because they paid those funds when they were working. That is like robbing them if we do not pay it back.
- I do not believe trickle down economics of Reagan, Bush Sr, and Bush Jr works. It never works.
- I believe in The New Deal that the republican party has been trying to destroy piece by piece.
- I believe in our social programs that keep families from living under bridges is what keeps us from being a 3rd world country.
- I believe in welfare but I also believe in Clinton's welfare reform where it is limited to 3 to 5 years in a lifetime. This prevents ppl from living on it their entire life.
- I believe in universal healthcare because a healthy nation is a powerful nation and also the pharmcy/insurance companies are corrupt.
- I believe in government regulation of monopolies such as power/energy, cable and telephone companies. Everytime the government deregulates something they promise the price will go down but it never does... it always increases thereby increases the cost of living.
- I believe in gay marriage because gay ppl pay taxes too and heteorsexual couples should not be given special rights by the states just because they are straight.
- I believe in a woman's right to choose.
- I believe in the right to own a gun because it is a constitutional right.
- I belived in the constitution 110% and the liberties it allows each citizen.
- I believe in not letting prejudices control me.
- I believe in equality for all.

There is more but that's enough to show the point.

Liberals are a living nightmare so if yall so far left even death looks right. The Media is misleading. Democrats are trying to dumb down america and want taxes higher, I'd rather have the taxes lowered. Being a Republican is far more better than a Liberal.

Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on whats for dinner.
Liberty is a well armed lamb.

I am for minimal government, that way the people have to disipline themselves.

I like the idea of democracy, but without restrictions it's no better than a communism.

Just ask them if they love burning flags, spitting on veterans, and love to nominate traitors that are in the Communist War Hero Museum as president (Hanoi Kerry).

Also, ask them if they love the UN more than the USA. Hell, the biggest things that excite them are abortion and gay marriage.

I am not a democrat because I am educated.

Proof cons are more educated and earn more than libbies:
