It all began in 1930 with a mother and twelve young hamsters - they were found in the Syrian Desert which is in the Middle East to the north of Israel. Eight feet underground a zoologist found them. He took them back to his laboratory in Jerusalem (all but 3 had died or escaped). Four months later the first hamsters were born in captivity. They were interbred and quickly multiplied.

In 1938 hamsters were taken to the United States. At first they were just used in laboratories. It wasn't until 1947 that they became pets.
