I'm a scuba diver and because of this I constantly get ear infections, and so far the best remedies is:
1 part of White vinegar diluted in 2 parts of water and add 1 part of rubbing alcohol, then put like 2 drops and cover with a piece of cotton, leave there for at least 15 minutes or if you like all night.

I highly recommend you go to your natural foods store and purchase ear drops containing mullein (for the pain) and garlic (natural antibiotic) in an oil base. It's safe, natural and quite effective.
While you're there, see if they have a nasal spray called Xlear, containing xylitol, a wonderful germ killer. Also need to be taking a high dose (3 grams or so) of vitamin C. I use Ester-C (calcium ascorbate) because it won't upset the stomach or cause diarrhea, even in high doses.
After you've used the drops for a few days and it feels a bit better, try ear candles to remove any wax, pus or water that may have accumulated with the infection.

I have treated all my son's ear infections with garlic oil in the ear canal and belladonna or chamomilla for the pain. Some nights he would wake in the middle of the night with throbing pain and fever- after treatment it would be gone in the morning.
