i received my BA in psychology and had no idea what i wanted to do with it. i took on an internship with the local school district with the psychologists in the special education department. i quickly discovered that i did not want to be a psychologist because it was all testing and structured, i want a less structured environment and more direct interaction with children. this led me to counseling, i finished up my internship by working with various counselors within the district and am now going to graduate school for my master's in school counseling. i guess my only advice is make sure you know and understand exactly what your role would be as a psychologist before you get too far along with school. it will take me a total of 6 years to get my degree for school counseling, not sure if psychologist need more than that but i am sure is at least a master's level position.

I am currently a therapist working with foster children. I have, to date, completed six years of college. I got a bachelor's in psychology and biology which took four years and a master's in counseling which took two years. I enjoy my work with children and plan to get my doctorate, which will take another three years. If you wish to be a child psychologist specifically that is a specialty you can get in your Ph.D. program. If, however, you want to work in the school system, being a school counselor only takes six years. If you want to do testing, you will need to get a Ph.D. in clinical psychology rather than counseling psychology.

I'm doing the same in college, but only for my Associates degree, child psychology can take a serious toll on you mentally and emotionally if you're not ready to hear about some of the problems that the child has had in past years.

Plan on going to college for six to eight years. You won't be able to get a decent paying job with anything less than a Masters degree. Also expect to be involved in doing lots of paper work.
