Anyone with any good tips on having a male Betta for the first time? And why the heck does he look like he's in attack mode all of the time. He's not moving. Just in attack mode. Is he dying?

I have owned Betta's for many years. They are charming and each have different personalities. I had one who was very moody and he didn't like changes but with some attention he'd come around. A little bitty fish and my heart is wrapped up like a bow. Anyway, PLEASE go to www.TheBettaObsession.com and there you can learn whatever you need to know and get some good links. Learn about Dropsy. It is lethal. And Popeye, because it can be cured but it is scary looking and a surprise if you don't expect it. There's another ailment called "swimmer's bladder" ? something like that, which I think a symptom of is that they seem to lay on the bottom of their bowl or tank, and I think is usually from overfeeding. Can be cured by withholding food for 24 - 48 hours but full details are at the sight I gave you. Good luck and enjoy!

There are different kind of Betta at different cost. I remember about 20 years back, in Singapore, the short tail Betta's are very popular cos they are breeded to fight, and usually moeny is involved. Long fins are not popular. And the price different alot. Normal Betta's cost around S$5.00 each but there are some that cost over S$20.00 each. The different is the aggressiveness normal Betta will only flare when in view of another, but the expensive ones will flare even you place your finger near. And they will attack your finger if you place it in. So maybe yours is one of those aggressive type.

Attack mode is with his gills flaring. Anything else ain't attack mode. In general he'll flare at the sight of another betta, or a mirror. In general you shouldn't leave a mirror in sight of your betta all the time. (A couple of hours of mirror time every week is generally considered a good thing.)

Beta's are also known as Siamese Fighting Fish. They are VERY territorial. That is why you ALWAYS see them in their own bowl at the store. I have been to many fish shows over the years. The way they are judged is determined by how much anger (Flaring) they show towards each other. You should NEVER put two of them in a tank. It would be like dog fighting.

Male Betta splendens males live to fight then breed. They live in pools that dry out. So aquarium shops can keep them in small containers. A male will fight another male betta so keep one per aquarium. You can introduce a mature female and they will breed. The eggs are deposited in a bubble nest. After breeding you may have to remo and separate the parents.
