There is no 555 area code. In movies you see things like 555-0000 that is a non working exchange. The 555 exchange does not exist because hollywood uses it as a number in movies so to prevent people from actually calling these numbers the 555 exchange does not exist.

It's not a California number as someone suggested. It was decided upon years ago by producers, writers & directors to be used universally. It's also used on TV shows. I've watched several episodes of Law & Order, SVU & heard Stabler or Benson rattling off a cell phone or home phone number with 555 as the prefix. Not just on that show but others as well. If the real number was given out, millions of people would be calling that number to see who it belongs to.

Having the 555 number is associated with calling someone in L.A. Remember the Last Action Hero movie?

555 is a null prefix. It is not ANYWHERE. It exists only so that a movie or TV show can say or print a phone number without every jerk on the planet calling it up and bothering a real person.

I know it has been answered already. The prefix of 555 does not exist. But just as an aside:
in the movie, "Last Action hero" when the kid is trying to convince Arnold that he is in a movie he tells him. "look at all the phone numbers, they all start with 555 are you telling me that there are only 9999 people in the whole entire world?". Arnold shhots right back with "that's why we have area codes" HILARIOUS! This is a movie taking a shot at itself kind of. Just thought I would share.

Because, if they use any other numbers they will give out a real phone number-so they adopted 555 which is never used in a phone number-ever since the song Jenny-867-5309, people were dialing that number in their area code and asking for Jenny-peopel began to file harrasment suits, so laws were adopted to prevent these types of harassment in the telecommunications industry and future lawsuits in the film and entertainment industry.

Because therea re cretins out there who have nothing better to do all day than dial phone numbers they see on TV or the movies or hear on the radio.
Ask the person who has 867-5309 in EVERY area code if he or she still enjoys getting 2:00 AM phones calls from morons looking for Jenny.
