Okay before you start sanding your hardwood floors you need to know more about it. If you don't know what you are doing you can ruin your floors for good. You may want to hire someone to sand them for you it isn't that expensive. After they sand them then you can refinish them yourself. Get some stain of your choice and you can either paint it on with a brush or you can use one of those sponge mops that works great. After that dries then put on some polyurethane the some way. But if you decide to sand the floor your self you need to be very careful not to hold the sander in place to long. Get plenty of advice about sanding before you do it yourself. You can rent a sander real cheap at some hardware stores and at a rental store. Good Luck!!!

Rent a floor sander and edger. Sand in the direction of the grain until the floor is done. Sand next to the walls with the edger. wipe down the floors with a damp rag to get up any dust that was left behind after sweeping. If you want to, you can put down a coating of stain at this point or just clear coat it using Polyurethane. I usually put down 7 coats of it to give a nice look. and I rough up each coat but the last 2 with a Brillo pad to give the next coat something to adhere to...

If you use a floor sander, be extremely careful. Those things can sand right down to the underlayment before you know it. Do you have a Home Depot or similar store around? They offer free DIY classes in many topics.

Rent a sander with a dust bag. The dust is ferocious.
Along the walls will have to be done by hand.
Be careful not to take too much wood, and that it's done evenly. It can be tricky without experience.
WEAR A MASK.

Spend $3.50 before you decide you want to do it or hire somebody. Either way, knowledge is priceless.

Sand them down with one of those big electric sanders. Then after clean up you need to stain (however many layers you want depending on how much colour and how dark you want), and then a couple layers of varnish to protect them.
