I would say that if the player kicks A**, then he/she could be playing a fisher price starter stick and sound good!

All these players that you mention I can almost guarantee played both LP's and Strats (and about every other guitar out there). They were looking for a specific tone and either by the feel of the guitar or the sound of a specific guitar through a specific amp they found what they like. For let's say shredding, you can set up any guitar for that, maybe lowering the action, getting jumbo frets, hotter pickups, etc...

So if you are wanting to emulate any certain artist, then by all means get what they gots and crank up the volume and have some fun!

If you are looking to be a player, then my suggestion is pick one and later on get the other, try to get your hands on any stick you can find, borrow, try out, whatever until you find what you like.

Personally I like strats because they are lighter than LP's (but I am lame... shrug). But when I want to just jam, nothing beats my Gretsch hollowbody because I like the fretboard and the sound is what I have always loved. Good Luck! Keep playing...
