Much of the answer would depend on what type of writing you are speaking of.

If you are writing an essay or non fiction the first thing you need to do is to get together all your facts. I find it easier to write each fact on a separate card and then look them over to determine what order I think I should place them in. Expand on each point you want to make and then draw your conclusion.

For fiction, it all depends on the writer. Most writers have some idea of the plot line before they ever start putting words to paper. It helps if you know where you want to begin the story and how you want the story to end, then you fill in the middle.

With poetry it tends to be an idea first. I feel something and want to express it. Remember poetry does not have to rhyme. It can be prose. Think of the way a very flamboyent person would speak. That can be poetry. Just get your feelings on paper.

The biggest obstacle to being an effective writer is giving up. Too often we feel that our writing just isn't good enough, so we stop. It may only take one more rewrite to be great. We won't know until we try that one more time.

It sounds like a question YOU need to answer personally.

What do YOU do when you sit down to write an essay or story? Do you brainstorm... Free write... make a list... write your theses first... what do you do from start to finish? Do you proof read at the end?

What helps you write? free writing? brainstorming? making a spiderweb of ideas?

What's your biggest problem in writing? What's the most difficult part about writing? Grammer? Thinking of a topic? What?

This is only a question YOU can answer.
