Or who cares as long as he makes money.

Do I think he should have been arrested for driving under the influence? Absolutely.

Did he have any right whatsoever to say what he said or treat the officers abusively? Nope, however, anyone who has ever been severely intoxicated would know that it often leads to stupid, abusive, irresponsible and careless behavior/statements. Do I think a "drunken tirade" qualifies him as a "bigot?" No, I don't. It does, however, concern me that the tirade in question is consistent with other comments, his refusal to disavow his father's denial of the Holocaust and the concerns about "Passion."

However, if we try to rule out every actor, writer and director with whom we disagree then we're going to end up watching very few films. Celebrities, despite their money and (at times) semblance of power, are still quite human and vulnerable to poor decisions, misjudgments and all the negative behaviors of humanity.

I refuse to condemn the man, because in condemning him I come dangerously close to doing what it seems he has done. I will simply recognize his behaviors, pray for him and hope that he does take steps to overcome his alcohol problem and that any bigotry that is within him can be overcome.

I'm glad he apologized for the things he said.

I also believe that while he should be held to the same standards as everyone else (read: he shouldn't be able to drive drunk and get away with it) I also don't think he should be held to higher standards than the rest of us.

I mean, I've gotten drunk and done some really stupid stuff. Fortunately, it's never gotten publicized. But he could at least shave off that beard...

I think that when you're drunk, you talk like a drunk man. I think that he has handled it responsibly so far, by apologizing. But Dude, did you read the Anti Def. League response? They say that his apology is not enough, and that Hollywood should shun him, and refuse to work with him, even if it costs them money. What the hell is that all about? Because they feel insulted, everyone should turn against the man? (Maybe ol' Mel wasn't too far off base with what he said... I dunno, I'm jus' wonderin'...)

Considering his right wing politics, his drunken obscene anti semitic cursing does not surprise me. Under the surface of every conservative there is a hateful bigot.

I think he was drunk and acted like a drunk. I don't see the big deal, I mean he's just a person who was drunk no different than any other person except that he's famous. So what if he's famous, he's just like anybody else.

He is a great movie producer and actor, just let him be him, but I do think he should not be driving under the influence, nobody should.

That's what usually happens when a person is wasted -- they speak the truth (re: antisemitic remarks).
