I used to pretend sharks were after me to get my speed up or that at the other end of the pool was an Olympic scout and it helped perfect my stroke.
Yeah I am wierd.

get a friend and ask him to swim first. wait for a while (depending on how good/ bad he is) and chase after him. if you get the timing right it should be challenging to both him and you. when i do that with my brother i let him go half the lap first since he's so slow.
time yourself it's a nice feeling when you beat your previous record.
randomly pick a fast swimmer and try to swim faster than him... if the fastest one is too slow then let him swim a little while and try to catch up to him.

Trying leaving out one leg or one arm while swimming to strengthen the other one. This means you have to work harder with the one that you are using.
Also try swimming with just your arms and no leg/foot action. Talk about something that will train your upper body!

find a partner to train with. a little friendly competition always spices things up.
or
swim naked at the public pool. try to ditch the lifeguards who want to throw you out.
