“Rednecks” are largely descendants of the Ulster-Scots and Lowland Scots immigrants who travelled to North America from Northern Ireland and Scotland in the late 17th and 18th centuries. The Ulster-Scots had historically settled the major part of Ulster province in northern Ireland, after previous migration from the Scottish Lowlands and Border Country. These pioneering people and their descendants are known in North America as the Scots-Irish.

Down south working on the farm in a shirt without a collar you get a sunburn. Working on the farm and getting a red neck meant you were ignorant of what was going on in the rest of the world. The only thing we had was honesty and good work ethic and an appreciation of friendships. We thought a handshake was much more binding than a contract. What did we know, we were just rednecks. Now we are told men should marry men, women should suck the brains out of a unborn child, there is no God and there is no right to pray to Jesus in school. Boy, what were we thinking, we were so stupid.

it had to do with farmers that worked in the field all day and the backs of their necks would become red and like leather. It became an insult when people started likening it to stupid and poor. It really isnt a good thing to call yourself a redneck even though lots of people do. i guess perpetuating the ignorance that was ment by the name
marines are refered to as leather necks for much the same reason

You know even people who quote Wiki sometimes miss the point. Yes it was the Scots. But it was a political/religious protest. It had nothing to do with farming.
"The word redneck was first cited in Scotland. In Scotland, the National Covenant and The Solemn League and Covenant (a.k.a. Covenanters) signed documents stating that Scotland desired a Presbyterian Church Government, and rejected the Church of England as their official church (the Church of England was never the 'official' church in Scotland, which was, of course, the Church of Scotland. What the Covenanters rejected was episcopacy--rule by bishops--the preferred form of church government in England.) Many of the Covenanters signed these documents using their own blood, and many in the movement began wearing red pieces of cloth around their neck to signify their position to the public. They were referred to as Rednecks."

Sunburnt necks from working in the fields, which is funny since most rednecks live in trailer parks and are on welfare.

the term originally comes from farmers (non city types) who's necks were constantly sunburned from working all day pushing a plow. now its just a term for folks who are smart enough to stay out of the 1000mph lifestyle in the city. and we get laughed at for it

From folks being out in the sun farming with their shirts on. The sun got on their neck but not the rest of their backs, causing a red neck.

i thought it meant farmers because they were outside in the fields all day thus their exposed parts were sunburnt. which was their neck. it has since become a different kind of term, i feel it is derogatory and do not use it, sometimes means racist or old fashioned or southern or rural or things like that.
