It's because they're like Oil and Water. They don't mix well.
I've seen 2 guys (one dem and one reb) almost get into a fist fight at Starbucks. They were sitting down drinking their coffee and having a discussion about politcs. They started arguing and then the name calling started. Luckily, one guy calmed down and just walked out of the shop before it escalated into a brawl.
I've seen 2 long time friends turn into distant aquaintances over politics. One is liberal and the other is a conservative. One person favored Bush in the elections and other Gore. They used to be good friends in High school and college. And now, they can barely hang out in the same room without biting each other. They totally hold a grudge over each other because of politics.
That is why I try to avoid political topics with friends/family if I know they are on the other side of the fence politically. It's not worth it.
People will judge you solely based on whether you're a Republican or Democrat. I mean they will have you all figured out before you even say a word. It's sad, but it happens all the time.

There was a time when Democrats and Republicans were polite and cordial to each other. As a Democrat I had no problem voting for good Republicans, and I miss Republicans like John Lindsay or Tom McCall or Everett Dirksen. But once guys like Rush Limbaugh got on the radio, and Newt Gingrich got in Congress, and once you had the impeachment of President Clinton over absolutely nothing, the Republicans were running on hate. I lay the responsibility at their doorstep for the incivility in politics today, they require hate, they use it to motivate their supporters. Too bad, you cannot appeal to the worst in people without encouraging it.

I have found a small handful of Democrats that I have been able to talk to rationally about politics. Though to be completely honest, they also have issues with the wacko left liberals that have taken over the party. They are more like Lieberman or John F. Kennedy Democrats then the nut cases we have running around now.

It all depends on the issue that they are talking about, and how big their egos are. I am a conservative republican and almost all of my relatives are liberal democrats, we just dont talk about politics. It's easy to have a civil conversation, just talk intelligently about the issues, and actually hear what the other person is saying. Opinions are like a%%H#@les, everyone has them.

I can and do have civil conversations. I just have to remember to respect the others point of view. There is too much lack of respect for others views. I think people feel as if there intelligence is threatened if someone has a differing viewpoint. Plus these days the 2 parties have strived so hard to separate themselves from each other it sparks heated debates. I think it's time for viable 3rd and 4th parties to help keep these politicians from dividing us so intensely. United we stand and divided we fall.

In general Dems and repubs get along just fine, it's the Librerals and Conservatives that cannot hold a civil conversation. They just see things so differently.

Because it involves politics, sometimes they're even having a normal conversation and it escalades into a big politics convention, it's so stupid for people to make such a big fuss over politics, that's where the corruption is based.
