You can't. Patenting is a very tedious and technical (and thus expensive) business. First, you need to research existing patents to see if anyone else has patented your idea before (with the total number of U.S. patents now in billions, it's a distinct possibility). Then you need to know how to write (and illustrate, if necessary) your patent application. This is what patent lawyers do all day long at $200 an hour. Then you have to submit the application and pay the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for reviewing it.

It is not possible to protect ideas but rather the representation of that idea. There are no free patents.

NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what else the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Patent It Yourself (11th Edition) by David Pressman
* Patents and How to Get One : A Practical Handbook by U.S. Department of Commerce
* How To Make Patent Drawings Yourself: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Jack Lo
* The Inventor's Notebook: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Fred E. Grissom

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

And, patents are used to protect a marketable product, during it's developement, and production...

You have to start somewhere, but, your 'great' idea has to be searched in the patent application records, and that costs money.

Then, the application must be accompanied by the fees, plus, you need to show all of your 'proof' that the idea is original, which means some other documents, records, or testimony by experts.

It all costs money.

Lots of folks have realized that if you patent in the USA, it is very expensive and/or impossible to enforce in the rest of the world.

So, they apply for a patent, mark the product, and, start making it, and hope to get their pot'o'gold. Meanwhile someone else where makes it in the millions, and markets it at 10% of your cost!

Very discouraging! There are ways to work it out, but, none are free! You could give up 90% ownership for a powerful industrial sponsor, if you could get in the door!

Retain all your proof of creation, and certified letters containing the info, photos, paper clippings, etc. un-opened! You'll need them later, in court!

Patents are issued by the US Patent office, the only source. There is a fee, you can't get around it.
