It has little to do with intelligence and much to do with style. In Krypton everyone dresses like Superman. But without the S of course. When he wants to seem like an earthling, he becomes Clark Kent and is a sharp dresser.

No one ever said he was smart. And if he is smart, compared to the idiots who don't realize he's Superman despite the fact that he wears a mask, I would say he is a genius.

Because Mrs. Kent (his mother) dressed him until he was 26, and now he doesn't know how to dress himself.
By the way, Superman was invented in the 1930s (I think) not the 70s.

the answer is he's not that smart, he's no batman, you see batman has to use his intelligence to create weapons, sheilds, and outwit the bad guy....superman just shows up and uses his strength.
