If you are having your compressor charged. Then it blows cold then starts blowing hot you most probably have a leak. Usually its not the compressor it is in the lines. Usually where they screw the lines on to charge your compressor. Remove the caps and put a little soapy water on the valve just like a bicycle tire and see if you see bubbles. If it is leaking need to get fixed before you ruin your compressor

There is oil mixed in with the refrigerant whether it is r-12 or r-134. Look at all the conections on the ac hoses, fittings, and around the pump. If it's leaking it will usually be wet there, if it is a slow leak there is usally a buildup of dust where it sticks to the oil.

Most of the time leak detection is not easy with die. Look closely at the rubber lines. If there is one that is chaffed, most likely it is leaking refrigerant as a gas and you won't see any die there. Also look around the crimps for oil residue, that's a good indication. Usually, leaks are in the lines. Inspect them thoroughly to find out which one is leaking. Good luck.
