We have an old laundry sink downstairs in our basement. We would like to convert this into an "emergency" toilet that can be used in case our one bathroom is occupied by someone else.

Is this a do-it-yourself project? If so, how would I do it?

Most sinks plumbing goes through the walls and toilets plumbing goes through the floor. Each have a completely different type of pipe as well. You are looking at a major renovation for this project.

On the lighter side, the easiest way to convert a sink into a toilet is to pee in the sink.

This is not a do-it-yourself project. If you pulled a toilet off its foundation you would probably see a larger diameter drain than you have from a sink. Visualize how fast a toilet pulls the bowl liquid and waste material down, versus a standard sink. There is a difference between draining water from brushing your teeth, and a mass of toilet paper and body waste.

I'm certain that the drain line from your sink is much smaller than the drain line from your toilet, even though the two will eventually meet into the same line.

Bottom line....i don't think it will work.

You could buy a toilet and have it installed, someone would have to dig a whole and put in a pipe for it to go to the sewer or septic tank.
