Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is a great read. It's about a teen girl, Bella Swan, who is starting at a new school mid-semester. Her adventures start off quite ordinary, until she falls for a local vampire who happens to be her lab partner in biology!

The sequel, New Moon, is due out in a few months.

Wicked by Gregory McGuire.
What happened to the wicked witch of the west that made her so mean? Here is her back story.

Excerpt: The Witch caught sight, not of the girl's face, but of the shoes. Her sister's shoes. They sparkled even in the darkening afternoon. They sparkled like yellow diamonds, and embers of blood, and thorny stars.
