Me and my Boyfriend are supposed to be going away to Marseille in France on 11th August. He booked the time off with one of his managers 4 weeks ago and she said there shouldn't be a problem. Today he spoke to the main manager and shes told him he can't go hes gotta work. We can't get a refund at all and we can't afford to waste £700, were not rich!!!!

We really want to go and need to go so we don't lose £700. He wants to quit really bedly but hes scared if he hands in his notice to late he wont get paid.

Didnt he tell his boss and arrange the dates formally? These things are usually arranged and put on paper formally. He needs to take in the tickets and ask the boss or the boss of the boss what he should do. Call up HR and complain
It doesnt sound like he put up a fight, cant he find someone to cover him

If you look in his employee handbook or contract of employment it will probably have a clause in that states in emergencys with busy workloads the company reserves the right to change their mind on holidays that are authorised already. The best thing to do is speak to HR department and talk it through with the HR/Personnel manager and ask them for advice. Or have another chat with the manager and explain that you have spent lots of money on the holiday and cant afford to miss it as you wont get a refund. Then see the reaction, if they still dont want to help then put an official grievance letter to the manager. This may sound long winded but if they are just being awkard they will probably change their minds once they see a copy of the grievance letter going to HR. They key with holidays also is to get the manager to sign a holiday form with dates on to help your case as showing them as unreasonable. If he gave 4 weeks notice of holiday this should have been enough time for the manager to arrange cover. It sounds like they are a nasty bunch anyway, everyone deserves their holiday. Dont hand the notice in until you get another job lined up first. And only go off sick as a last resort. If he goes off sick they will be suspicious and if caught he could be sacked which will make it a nightmare to find another job with bad references. Hope this helps, i'm no expert but make the decision that is right for you. good luck and hope you have a lovely holiday once this is all sorted out

Have you considered going to the Citizens Advice Bureau local to you to enquire on employment law?
Find out if your partner's employer is acting lawfully.

Failing that, have you a friend who can take his place on holiday then you wont have wasted all of the money spent on it? I know it wont be the same, but your partner retains his job for now until he decides otherwise, and your holiday is still intact.
Good Luck

If he booked 4 weeks ago and was told there was no problem then he has every right to go without losing his job. I work for a shitty agency and i have at least that right.

The manager saying 'there shouldnt be a problem' is not the same as saying yes, he really should have got a definite answer first, I dont think he is going to get anywhere complaining to personnel, as he didnt have it formally approved. sorry.

If he doesnt' like his job, tell him to find a new one, arrange it so he can start his new job a couple of days after your holiday. Tell him to call in sick or not turn up and go on your holiday. If they sack him, he's still got a job to go to.

If he was told there wasn't a problem then they cant change their mind.

He gave them enough notice so he should tell them its all booked and paid for and he is going, if they threaten to sack him, call their bluff...see them in court for wrongfull dismisal.
