I have a 2 month old, and right now he is up to 4 oz. of formula every three to four hours. It seems that he gets plenty full after feedings but when will he need 6 oz? Do you go by the age, or when he is hungry?

Talk to your pediatrician, but you should usually start increasing the amount of formula when he finishes his 4 oz and is still looking for more or he's not going for the full 3 or 4 hours without getting fussy because he's hungry.

Go by the baby's hunger. He will let you know when he is full. 4 oz. is pretty normal. If he is finishing bottles and still seems hungry maybe fill one to six and see if he drinks it. If he happens to spit up alot when done it may just be too much but you will know.

My son is 8 months old and still only eats 4-6 ounces. He also eats about every 2-3 hours. My doctor told me as long as he's not under- or over-weight to just go with it. Feed him when he's hungry; don't force him to eat more because he'll probably just spit it up anyways. lol.

Oh, don't worry, he will let you know. When he continues to cry after his bottle, that's your signal to offer him six ounces, instead of four. Or, when he starts wanting to eat more frequently, that may be a sign that me needs more each feeding. If he seems to be thriving, you have nothing to worry about. Each baby has different eating habits.

I've never formula fed but I can tell you that you need to follow your baby's lead. Only your baby can tell you how much he needs to eat....not someone on the net, not your doctor and not a can of formula. Follow baby's lead and do what seems to work best for him.
