Can you explain the catch behind Second Life? Once I've created a character, what should I do?

I understand that Second Life is totally free-form, meaning that I can do anything I want. Still, what do most people do? What about it catches people's interests? I am interested in learning more about it, and would appreciate any tips for how to "get it".
