They will do one of several things, or maybe two or three things together:

Prick your finger and test your blood on a little glucose monitor. Results come back in about 30 seconds.

Give you "glucose" to drink, which does not taste bad at all, kind of like an Orange Crush. Then test your blood. This will be done after a 12-hour fast.

They will ask you to give a urine sample. This is also usually done after a 12-hour fast.

They may even take a full on blood sample from you, but probably not.

I've been tested several times because I come from a family of diabetics. It's really no biggie at all.

When I was pregnant, I had to go for the long fast due to gestational diabetes (also known as a Glucose Tolerance Test). Basically, you go into the lab or office fasting (no food) and they draw your blood to see what the sugar levels are. Then they give you some glucose and check your blood sugar level again in a specified amount of time. I was there 6 hours and they drew blood every hour. You may want to ask them if they can put in an IV line because then you only get stuck once.
