there are just so many people that i've talked to who say they have a sexless marriage. What happens to the male libido after age 45 or so? and why do some men withhold affection from their wives after many years of marriage?

Because they start having erection issues in some cases and in others there are years of crap built up that has never been resolved but mostly because a few years back when things started declining nobody paid enough attention to fix it when it could still be fixed without a massive effort.

It's not the male libido as much as just plain age. You've been hearing alot about erectile dysfunction on TV. Men are usually asked at the MD's office if they have this. They are embarrased and deny it. But truthfully, ED is a sign of vascular problems. There may be a clot forming somewhere in the body or the man may have diabetes. ED may be the first sign. But they deny it instead of seeking treatment. My husband and I do not have a sexless marriage. And we are both dangerously close to 45. However, we also don't screw like rabbits either. At our age, it's not about sex. It's about intimacy and companionship.

Why do you assume that it's always the men withholding affection? Do your homework! Why do you think men leave marriages? It ain't the male libido that's the majority of the problem in all cases here! I spent 22 years in a marriage to a woman, who, after the second child, didn't want or like sex anymore. Believe me, it wasn't all that often or great when she would do it. I'm in a wonderful relationship now (4yrs)...and we make love regularly and it's fantastic. With my first wife, it was sorta like that joke, where the wife says "ya' know,..the 2nd time we do it...I perspire. He says..."that's 'cause the 1st times in January....2nd time's in August!! With the right partner (like fine wine) it just keeps getting better and better with age. We probably do it now,...more than you!
Hey,.. don't forget,...when you're too old to "cut the mustard"...you can always lick the jar!

It's been said that 45+ have more sex than young couples. Unless there's a medical problem, old folks get there freak on.
My grandparents told me that they had sex more when the kids moved out. There were no distractions and they didn't have to sneak away for a little quickie. They are in there early 80's and still freaking.

Mens life begin at 40. So, it is not true if they stop having sex at 45! In certain cases where they have health problem, obesity or when the wife had menopause, probably sex is less frequent and sometime painful.

None of the ones I know and I'm in that age group. As for the second part of your question, I have no idea since after nearly 30 years it still hasn't happened in my marriage yet.

I do not think this the norm, I am 43 and my husband is 52 ,we still have sex, maybe for some people it wanes but not for us. My husband is VERY affectionate. Age is a state of mind. If something happened and we could not have sex anymore, our marriage would survive.

it has to do with years of unresolved issues built up or might think they are too old to do it. But if living a healthy life, they is no age limit. Some men might have erectile dysfunction because of health issues, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart issues, high blood pressure. The medications can make it worst.
