The chicken or the egg is a reference to the causality dilemma which arises from the expression "which came first, the chicken or the egg?". Since both the chicken and the egg create the other in certain circumstances (a chicken emerges from an egg; an egg is laid by a chicken) it is ambiguous which originally gave rise to the other. Purely logical attempts to resolve the dilemma result in an infinite regress, since an egg was caused by a chicken, which was caused by an egg, etc. When used in reference to difficult problems of causality, the chicken and egg dilemma is often used to appeal to the futility of debate and lay it to rest.

The saying is based around the supposed impossibility of answering the question - the chicken must have been born from an egg, but the egg must have been laid by a chicken. It's used to suggest a question of cause/effect is unanswerable.
I say the chicken came first, and I could probably back it up if I could be bothered.

I seen a greeting card which answered this very question..
A chicken is sitting at the side of a double bed, arms folded looking mightily cheesed off.
An egg is lying back on the bed, arms behind it's head smoking a cigarette.
At the bottom the caption reads -
That settles that old argument!

The Egg came first. It wasn't a chicken egg, rather it was the egg of some proto-chicken. This proto-chicken evolved into the present day chicken. SO: the egg came first, the chicken much later.

For there to be an egg, there should be two chickens to do sex, so its the chicken that came first.
Oh by the way, those two chickens were made by God on the first place.

Here we go again...if you read the Bible it doesn't say God created a bunch of eggs and laid them around. Amoungst other things, it says He created man, beasts, fishes, and fowl...so for the last time (I hope) it was the chicken who came first. Smile.

It began as a joke to taunt Christians.........logic tells us that no matter what you believe, God or Evolution, that the chicken came first.
