You probably need a combination of an appropriate algecide and chlorination. Maintaining adequate levels of chlorination will usually keep the algae in check. If you have a bad infestation then the different algaes (green, black, mustard) have specific treatments.

If you describe the type and size of pool you have and what the water appearance is then we can give you more specific answers.

You should probably take a pint sample of your pool water to a local pool supply place where they will test it, usually for free, and tell you what you need to do to achieve the proper chemical and mineral balance and how to maintain it. You can also test it yourself with a chemical kit or test strip that you can get at the pool supply place or local department store like Walmart, KMart, Target or Sears.

Aquachem strips are really easy and you can go on their website to find out what treatment is needed based on the results of the test.

Good luck and I hope you clear up your water and have a fun swimming season.

You need to get a pool scrub brush with a long handle and scrub it loose. Then, test the chlorine in the pool. Otherwise you need to hire a pool cleaner. Also check your filters. You may need to drain it depending on how bad the algae is.

Algae forms in your pool because you are not keeping enough chemicals in there to stop the growth. Chlorine is mainly what you should use. They make that stuff for pools though.
