There was a great independently owned restaurant where I used to attend college. T.J. Rockwells ... Awesome American fare.
As far as chain restaurants go, I like Applebee's for the casual atmosphere, Olive Garden and a few other places.
I really like the Original Fish Market here in Pittsburgh. While the menu items can be pricey, the quality of the food is exceptional and the service is excellent.

I actually have three:
Franchise cuisine: The Olive Garden (Memphis, TN)
Favorite Appetizer: Make your own sampler: I usually choose the cheese sticks, stuffed mushrooms and toasted ravioli.
Favorite Entrees: Stuffed Chicken Marsala or Steak Gorgonzola.
Always get those Delicious bread sticks and house salad with house dressing. The have the best soups as well.
Fun Down Home Cooking: Lambert's (Sikeston, Missouri)
Home to the thrown giant homemade hot yeast rolls!!!
They have a unique practice of serving pass over food. Theses are items they bring to your table in large stock pots and offer to you at no extra charge. My favorites are the black eyed peas, fried potatoes with onions, pasta with sauce and fried okra.
I usually eat either the liver and onions or fried fish or shrimp dinner.
Wine, Dance and Dine: Issac Hayes Restaurant (Memphis, TN)
It is located in one of the best mall and entertainment centers in Memphis. It is located at Peabody Place. The scene is a plush bar, restaurant and band stand. There is a large patio and comfortable booths. The food is divine I suggest the "sweet water" catfish, beef brisket, corn bread and greens. They have a very healthy menu with a lot of vegetable chooses. They have great drinks and desserts. You get nice portions.

We just had a new locally-owned BBQ joint open up down the road from us: Bird's Smokehouse is awesome! I tend to prefer the local restaurants. Thai Smile and 909 Grill are my faves (but my friend the health inspector tells me the only place in town she will eat is Thai Smile.) Cheeseburger in Paradise is GR8 for a chain.
