Ok - this is my third time getting kidney stones in as many years. Dr. puts me on painkillers and anti-inflammatories. This is getting ridiculous. Any ideas on how to pass the kidney stone faster -- or how to prevent them in the future?

Water. Water. Water. Drop the sodas especially the dark ones. Drop the calcium. Drop the fish. There is a procedure called lithotrypsy. It is a painless crushing of the stones while they are still in your kidneys making passing them much easier.

Drinking lots of fluids will help flush things out, but since this happening frequently to you I agree that the best thing would be find ways to prevent a stone in the first place. Has the Dr had your stones analyzed? Stones can be made up of different chemicals and knowing what type of stone you are forming will help in prevention. I included a link below that has helpful advice.
I wish you luck. My husband had a stone not long ago and the pain was awful. Hopefully you'll find something that works for you.

You can do a 24 hour urine study. When you do this, you collect all of your urine in a special container for an entire day, then you mail some of it to a lab. They do a work up and send it back to your doctor which lists all of the risk factors and where you fall into each category.

For me, all of my risk factors were ok except for one. This one was the amount of urine output. Basically, I wasn't drinking enough. This factor is a special one in that if your fluid output is low, then all of the other factors are basically increased.

When I drink enough fluids--no stones. When I get lazy and stop drinking lots of fluids--more stones.

Obviously, your situation may be completely different, but if you don't drink a whole lot that is a good place to start.

I don't know where you live, but here in my southern state, my husband has had lithotripsy, twice. There is a machine that breaks up the kidney stone so that it can be safely passed without pain. They will usually give you a mild anesthetic. It is an outpatient procedure.

Talk to a urologist about having this done.
Hope this helps.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Drink a lot of water. Like 8 glasses or more a day and stay away from things with a lot of salt.

I've had them 3 times myself. I've always had to have surgery to remove them. Also, I've heard to drink lots of lemonade because it has some kind of acid (citric??) in it that keeps them from coming back.
