what's wrong with the fax machine when all it transmits is no answer?

it's a hp all in one 5510 office jet

Most likely it's not your fax machine, It's the receiving fax that's not turned on.

The number you might be trying to fax too may be busy, may be out of paper or off. Before you think your fax is not working ...find out if the fax on the other side is working.

The other side may be turned off or out of paper. Call the people you are trying to fax. It will ring constant until they put paper in.
