The Count of Montecristo by Alexandre Dumas.
It's long, and a little hard to get into at first, but it has everything
Love,betrayal,revenge,despair,obscene wealth,bandits etc.
If you've seen the movie then you have some idea of what it's about. But,believe me, the movie is a soap opera compared with the book. The movie is full of dumb sword fights, dumb dialogue, and the conventional,Hollywood, sex and violence crap.
To make matter worse, it either changed, or had none of the carachters and details which had made the story so great.
The novel is a work of art.A feast for the senses
There are scenes in there that make modern-day suspense, and storytelling seem trivial and altogether stupid.
When I read it I was fifteen.
I never wanted to put it down.
And I never wanted it to end.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is probably my favorite at the moment. I love Orson Scott Card though...particularly Ender's Game.

Here's my review of Twilight:
