RAM stands for Random Access Memory and it's used by the computer to store all kinds of information that it needs to run an application. This information is stored in the RAM for the application to run faster. More RAM means more speed but the CPU and video card also have a major contribution to the computer's speed. So, in your case the RAM might not be the problem. That depends on how much RAM you have. If the computer pauses only when you try to play videos, then the video card or the video codecs might be the problem. You should try installing the latest drivers for your video card and also install the latest video codecs in order to properly play different video formats.

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It is the part of your computer that's kind of like a chalkboard: You can write on it, erase and start over again. When you have a program open, the program operates in RAM. The more RAM you have -- up to a point -- the faster the program will operate. This is especially true of games.
Many computers grab a slice of RAM and use it as the memory for its graphical display. Again, with these computers, as you increase your RAM, you will increase your graphics memory. For example, I have a Toshiba laptop that had 512 MB or RAM, but it used 64 MB of this for the graphics memory. When I upgrated to 1 GB of RAM, the graphics system grabbed more and now it uses 128 MB of the computer's RAM.
The more RAM you have -- and the bigger the computer's graphics memory is -- the faster your computer will run. It depends on your computer but if you run Windows XP, I recommend 1 GB of RAM. Your 2003 computer will probably not see much additional performance if you add more than 1 GB of RAM.

It depends. Video games and Video are dependent on both RAM and CPU. I would suggest have at least 1 GB of RAM for today's video and gaming applications, but if your CPU is slow all the RAM in the world will not help. Another factor is the video card, but considering you have a laptop that isn't really an option. A PC is really the best option for games and videos.

RAM is Random Access Memory. This is the memory that your programs are loaded into and where the information they are using is put. Contrast this to ROM, which is Read-Only Memory -- in short, what's in it cannot be changed.
Getting more RAM will often help with lagging. However, any time your system is lagging in an unusual manner, you will also want to ensure that you've done anti-virus and anti-spyware scans on it. Grisoft offers a free version of AVG, their anti-virus package, and Spybot Search & Destroy is one of the best known anti-spyware programs available -- and it's free. A basic web search should find the downloads for these two programs.

Games use two types of memory on your computer, RAM the memory your computer uses to run programs and Video memory, the memory built into your video card.
Processor speed and front side bus speed also affects game speed.
Ram is the cheapest way to get better performance.

getting RAM might help RAM=random acces memory the more you have the smoother your pc will run
now with the videos if you are trying to watch them while they are still downloading RAM may not be your answer it could be your internet connection if it cant download fast enough while you are watching it will pause for a little while so it can download more for you to watch
however RAM is never a bad thing to add if you get some you will surely notice a difference on your pc

RAM is Random Access Memory. I don't know how much you have currently, but if it is 3 years old it could probably use a boost. If you are currently under-RAM'd it will certainly provide a performance improvement.

You never said what laptop or how much memory you had. With present operating systems, 512 meg is pretty much a minimum though.
