I was reading reviews for a Paul McCartney DVD on amazon.com and the word Macca kept coming up. Is this McCartney's nickname or what?

Yes, it's short for McCartney. The only other Beatle with a nickname was Ringo Starr, whose real name was Richard Starkey. He had been called 'Rings' before that because of all the rings he wore but charged it to Ringo. The reason he changed Starkey to Starr was because when he was with his previous group, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, he used to do a drum solo that was billed as 'Star Time'. Ringo added a letter 'r' and made it Starr, hence 'Ringo Starr'. Paul was really only called Macca many years after the Beatles split, it was never a 'Beatle' name. His real name is James Paul McCartney but was always known as Paul because his dad was called James too and used to play in a band named 'Jim McCartney's Jazz Band'. They used his second name to avoid confusion between the two.
