The reason is simple. We are on the verge failing to upkeep your demand for oil. Oil being the sole reason for our energy output in everything. Cars to the can foods on your cupboard.

We are digging a hole for ourselves. If we keep relying on a slowly disappearing resource. Ask yourself why has the price of oil be increasing this few weeks? It will continue.

Why this addiction? Simple. It our need for economic growth. Our competitiveness.

As soon as the oil prices REALLY start impacting our lifestyle, the market for alternate energy sources will explode. The political pressure for the continued dependence on oil may be outdone by it's own greed.

The US (and most european countries) are great at filling in untapped business markets, and we adjust as need be.

It is human nature to want economic growth. As an individual you can control the speeding up or slowing down of your own environment. But you will never be able to put that thought into the head of a typical capitalist. My first thought was, "cool, more for me" and I can assure you I am not alone in that thought. Yes it is wishful thinking to limit the boundaries of man. It will never happen, especially in a country where it is rewarded.

Economic growth benefits all within a society. Think of the poor in the US today, versus the average worker in the 1800's. The poor are much better off today, thanks to indoor plumbing, central heat, access to medical facilities, better hygiene, better diet, and better transportation. All made possible by economic growth.

There is no connection, to me between the drive for economic growth and an "aggressive society." You Liberals are really intent on making us poorer, aren't you? Why? Aren't you glad to have PC's, the internet etc.?
