Dinosaurs laid eggs long before there were chickens.

Easy: The egg. Why? Because of slight genetic mutations. The original creature that gave rise to the chicken was not a chicken but the eggs that were hatched by each changing generation were changing towards the chicken we know today. Up until a point where the egg that hatched the chicken we know today was laid by a descendant of the chicken that no longer exists.

The egg, a species does not change when it goes from embryo to adult. Thus one can conclude that the first chicken had to come from the first chicken egg. And its parent must have been a protochicken and laid a mutated egg resulting in the first chicken.

The chicken or the egg is a reference to the causality dilemma which arises from the expression "which came first, the chicken or the egg?". When used in reference to difficult problems, a chicken and egg problem is similar to a Catch 22 situation where something cannot happen until a second thing does, and the second thing cannot happen until the first does. For example, a person might have trouble finding a job without work experience, but to get work experience he/she must get a job.

The Chicken. The egg evolved from the chicken.

What ever you order first, comes first. (Well... in a restaurant.)

Egg is the answer to your question. Because there were many other egg laying creatures in this world before a hen (chicken) was ever born. (You didn't ask whether 'the chicken or the chicken egg'.)

The egg will not hatch without a chicken to sit on it. The chicken came first.

The Egg. That's why it's a breakfast food and the chicken is eaten later in the day ;-)
