3x - 5(3x - 7) = 2(x + 9) + 45
3x - 15x + 35 = 2x + 18 +45
-12x + 35 = 2x + 63
-14x = 28
x= 28/-14
x= -2
Let's Check
3*-2 - 5(3*-2-7) = -6 - 5(-13) = -6 + 65 = 59
2 (-2 + 9) + 45 = 2(7) + 45 = 14 + 45 = 59

distribute everything first...

3x -15x +35 = 2x+18 +45

combine like terms on each side of = sign

(3x -15x) +35 = 2x+(18 +45)
-12x +35 = 2x + 63

add 12x to both sides

-12x +35 = 2x + 63
-12x +12x +35 = 2x + 63 +12x
35 =63 +14X

now subtract 63 from both sides

35 -63 =63 -63 +14X
-28 = 14x

now divide by 14 on both sides

-28/14 = 14x/14
-2 =x

check your work

does putting a -2 in for x make the initial equation true?

3x -15x +35 = 2x+18 +45
3(-2) -15(-2) + 35 = 2(-2) +18 +45
-6 +30 +35 = -4 +18 +45
59 = 59

If your parentheses are correct, then:

* 3x - 5(3x - 7) = 2(x + 9) + 45

* 3x - 15x + 35 = 2X + 18 + 45

* -12x + 35 = 2x + 63

* -14x = 28

*x = 28 / -14

So
x = -2

3x - 5(3x - 7) = 2(x + 9) + 45
3x-15x +35 = 2x +18 + 45 Distributive Property
-12x +35 = 2x + 63 Combine like terms
-35 -35
-12x = 2x + 28
-2x -2x
-14x = 28 28/-14= -2
x = -2

3x - 5(3x-7)=2(x+9) +45

first distribute the 2
3x-5(3x-7)=2x+18+45

Next add 18 and 45
3x-5(3x-7)=2x+63

subtract 3x from each side
-15x+35= -1x+63

subtract -15x from -1x
35=14x+63

add 63 to 35
98=14x

divide 98 by 14
X=???

there ya go

3x - 5(3x - 7) = 2(x + 9) + 45
3x-15x+35=2x+18+45
-12x+35=63+2x
35=63+14x
-28=14x
-2=x

x = -2

2006-07-31 16:18:55 · answer #7 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

So 3x - 5(3x - 7) = 2(x + 9) + 45
3x-15x+35=2x+18+45
3x-15x-2x=35+18+45
-14x=98 [ times (-1)]
14x=-98
x=-98:14
x=-7

3x-5(3x-7)=2(x+9)+45

Multiply out to get rid of perenthesis:
3x-15x+35=2x+18+45

Combine like terms:
-12x+35=2x+63

Manipulate like terms to put on same side of equation:
-14x=28

Solve for x:
x=-2
