I recently put a glass block window in my house and the next day i noticed a film of mortar on the brick. I wire brushed the brick and someone told me that I should use diluted meuriatic acid and spray it on the brick and then wire brush it. Will this work and is this the application for meuriatic acid. If not what could I use.

Clean and dry the glass with the cement on it. Make a wax dam or cup under the area of the glass with mortar on it. Pour concentrated muriatic acid (another name for hydrochloric acid), (it is sold at 40% acid at the local hardware store.), into the cup & let the acid react with the calcareous cement. Carefully flush out the acid after 10 min. and renew with fresh acid . Repeat the cycle until there is no cement showing.
Please use eye protection, and rubber gloves, and if the weather is cool a plastic raincoat if you wish, to be ultra careful. The gloves and goggles are a must.
Flush the spent acid with a lot of water. Be careful about spatter.
You could neutralise the acid on the glass with baking soda in water.
Please note if you must dilute the acid, aalways pour the acid into water. Never the other way around. NEVER pour water into acid. It can boil/spit up and hit you in the eyes. Which could cause blindness if the acid is nit immediately flushed out.
Cheers.
Wire brushes can scratch glass and other vitreous products use a fresh razor blade instead. Vinegar will work (it's up to 5% acetic acid, Muriatic acid works much faster BUT it must be handled carefully.
Dan.

I'm am a brick layer and I install glass block all the time. You need steel wool a fine grate and just rub it clean. If the mortar is on thick pry it off with a puddy knife always push the knife never pull it back and forth. it might scracth it.
if you installed the glass blocks in mortar you can use moratic acid with water. 15-20 % acid and 80 water. But he steel wool will work.

maximum of motives, maximum of technicalities. The fault is that the bricks are being broken up by the frost through fact the bricks are too delicate (no longer frost resistant) you ought to place slate alongside the appropriate to quit the water from entering into the bricks however the face of the wall (if the bricks are showing deterioration) desires something else. Get some d.%. injection fluid out of your builders service provider and spray or paint it over the face. It gets absorbed into the bricks and instruments. 2 or 3 coats will make it water-resistant and if the water can no longer get in it may no longer freeze. There are 2 styles of d.%. answer - water based and solvent based. the solvent based is plenty greater advantageous yet you will desire to placed on goggles. No tradesmen mandatory and no huge outlay. solid success.
